The beard challenge

If you missed the background of the challenge catch yourself up real quick.
I'm tryin' to get down to 165.
This morning I weighed in at 177.0
Two day ago I was at 176.2
Bummer
The beard is growin' till the weight comes off.
Todd has taken up the challenge as well. Anyone else want to join?
Our beards are at about the same length right now.
Went and bought some 0 and 1 point soup today.
I gotta get to the gym.
I have a feelin' I've got the Gandolph beard in my future.

Sabbath

Last night was the best night of sleep yet for Moses!
Alyssa let me sleep till 9:30...it was amazing.
Hung with Sofia and Mo in the morning.
Picked up Zeke.
Family grocery trip...always good times...picked up some soup in anticipation of fall
Put kids down for nap...got an episode of Heros in.
Played with kids after nap
Went to the Osborne's for Davey's 4th B-Day...pizza, pinata's, and bikes...good times.
Got home...kids in bed...finished season one of Heros.
It's been a great day of rest after a really crazy week.
How was your day of rest this week?

Thoughts from this Sunday

Go here to check it out.
I gave a message on loving the least.
You can hear it here in a couple days.

We got our shirts!

The whole crew is rockin' em tonight!
It's absolute insanity trying to get all 5 people in my family in a picture.
I think all the faces sum up life at this point.
Moses' onesie is amazing.

Putting together some thoughts for this weekend

Sorry for the sparse blogs.
I'm speaking this weekend at the Stirring. "We love the least." Matthew 25. Sheep. Goats. They didn't see Jesus. Loving the least takes seeing with the eyes of Jesus...a whole new lens...gotta come to get the rest.
I started putting my thoughts together yesterday.
This week has been all about sound and projectors and in ear monitor purchases.
God is awesome though...he woke me up a week and a half ago at 5am and downloaded 75% of my message in about half an hour. I think he knew my week was going to be busy.
Come hang tomorrow night. Did I mention goats!

Prayer this week

Colossians 4:2-6
2
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Praying for open doors to see what God is already doing and joining in!

Busy times

New baby...no sleep
Almost 2 year old...already fully embracing the terrible two label
Five year old Evil Kinevil on a bike. Last night he cut his forehead and three inches off his bangs with Alyssa's shaving razor!
Trying to be a husband.
Purchasing all the sound and media equipment for the Stirring church plant
Overseeing Stirring Kids and Life Groups.
Leading a leadership meeting on Sunday.
Speaking on Sunday at the Stirring.
Monday is going to be amazing!

Seems like an epidemic. All the dudes at our Life Group on Tuesday have a ton going on. September started with a bang. Can't believe it's almost over.

Caught the last five minutes of David Blane tonight...

Dumbest thing I've ever seen.
Anyone else see it?
There's no way I can get that five minutes of my life back.
Bummer.

Great Sabbath

Dropped Zeke off at school.
Alyssa took Moses in for doctors appointment.
I put Sofia down for a nap.
I GOT A TWO HOUR NAP!!!! Praise God from whom all blessings flow...it was amazing.
Nate called me half way through my nap but I'll forgive him in 7 weeks...It's what Jesus would do!
Picked Zeke up from school.
Put Sofia down for a nap.
Put Alyssa down for a nap.
Threw Moses in the stroller and watched Zeke fly around the neighborhood on his bike for an hour.
He's seriously nuts...standing on the pedals to ride faster...jumping over speed bumps...cannot believe he learned how to ride his bike a couple days ago!
I hope this isn't the season of E.R. visits in our future.
Took the kids to the Osborne's went out to dinner with my wife...thanks guys...it was awesome!
Came home...kids in bed...watched some Hero's...don't even think about telling me what happened tonight on the season premiere...we're almost finished with the first season.
Great day!

Only my son

Zeke is quite a character. Not always up for trying something new.
We've had his training wheels off his bike for 3 months but he refuses to let me teach him.
He just pushes it around the neighborhood and cruises around without pedaling.
I've offered help 100 times and it's met with meltdown every time.
Tonight we were at the Osbornes.
Look outside and my son is cruisin' around on Davey's bike...riding like a seasoned veteran!
What the heck??!?
We run outside and he has this huge grin on his face as he's wheelin' through the back yard.
Can't believe it.
That's Zeke's M.O.
Didn't walk forever...then one day out of nowhere he takes off runnin!
Won't go to Kindergarten without me carrying him into class...now I have to drop him off and let him walk in by himself.
He's a trip. I love my boy. He makes me a better person.

The economy is looking gloomy but it could be worse!

Smile...You could have this dudes job!
My dad sent me this...classic.

165...here I come

Well I didn't reach my goal of weighing 175 this summer but that hasn't stopped me from setting another goal. I weighed 178.8 as of this morning but I need a new goal to get me goin' again!
This time I'm adding a little something to the plan to spice it up.
I haven't shaved since Sunday (I know I grow facial hair like Teen wolf) and I decided I'm not going to shave till I'm 165.
Haven't told Alyssa yet...she loves the beard...that was sarcasm if it didn't translate through the internet!
I'll shave the neck and trim up the sides but everything else is goin' mountain man!
I'm hopin' to get there before December.
At 165 and a gnarly beard I'll probably look like Tom Hanks in Castaway...all emaciated and dirty lookin'.

If I meet my goal before Christmas I think I'm gonna treat myself to a tattoo.
Haven't told Alyssa that either!
I want to get a treasure chest overflowing with booty that has a banner under it saying "don't store your treasure on earth" with a bunch of moths around it. Read Matthew 6:19-21 for context.
Side note: got the Vespa back today...amazing!

Out of control garage sale

Just came from setting up the parking lot at the Naz.
The Stirring is having their first parking lot sale tomorrow for our church plant.
7-3pm...be there!
We might make $157,943.00
I've never seen so much stuff piled up in one place before.
Tomorrow's gonna be crazy.
Gafner's sleeping down there with all the stuff...I'm pretty sure he has a gun!
I love garage sales!

Tomorrow I ride!

Well...hopefully in a week or so.
Most of my Redding peeps have no idea that I have a Vespa.
A 2003 Grand Turismo...and it's mint green...don't be jealous.
Ever since I moved up here it's been out of commission. Battery and other issues.
I've had it on the road for about a combined 2 hours.
In Riverside I was on that bad boy every day.
Well Gafner and I got it onto his truck today and it's going to the shop tomorrow.
I finally found a place that services Vespa's.
Hopefully I'll be back riding soon...just in time for it to start raining!

The Hub

Klein and Skinner pointed out that "the hub" is my new nickname.
For all my friends that still have no idea how to use an RSS feed.
I've been designated the dude that has a ton of links to peoples sites...so I get used to take you to other people...I'm ok with it.
How many of you out there are using me ? I just want to know what our blog relationship looks like. I can handle it...I'm a big boy!

Missed my own party...bummer

We blew past 50,000 visitors and I totally missed it. We were supposed to throw a big blog party and I blew it. Checked it two days ago and then forgot about it. Thank you to everyone that is hangin' out at RevRock. It's been a blast...frustrating at times...but I love the community of people we have comin' through every day.
I've just spent a couple days with my parents, my bro and his wife and I feel like the blog has really helped us stay connected through this transition of us moving up here. Mike and Becky definitely need a blog. Riverside peeps need to turn on the blog pressure for them!
Anyways, just wanted to say thanks.
If I could get you all in a stadium at one time I'd rock it like Obama and set up some sweet pillars to make me feel larger then life...then I'd tell a poop story about one of my kids!
Next blog party will not be a let down...
Just wait till 100,000!

Go check out the new site

Patrick is the man. He just created the new Stirring website.

Thoughts on Sunday at the Stirring

Date night

That's right folks...we got out last night...just me and my smokin' hot wife!
2 hour dinner at Girandas...amazing...thanks for the gift certificate Heather...it was awesome.
Came home...helped my mom put the kids to bed...fed Moses...back out for coffee.
So good to spend time eating...looking at my wife...talking.
It's been a long month since the baby...last night was definitely needed.
Thanks mom!

Third kid

This is the fifth picture taken of Mos and it was taken with photo booth. At this point with Zeke he had eye damage from the amount of camera flash hitting his eyes. Sorry buddy! I realize some of you like my aunt Lindi might be coming to my blog everyday just to see update pics of Moses so I will periodically put some of these up. Don't be concerned...he does have a right hand that has all five fingers...he just moves too much for pictures.
My mom got here last night. My dad, my bro and Becky show up Sunday night. It will be good to hang with the fam.
For some reason Moses looks much more rested than I do after 20 minutes of sleep last night! Have I aged 15 years in the last month?

Opening line to book I'm reading

You can't take an epidural shot to ease the pain of giving birth to character.
Here's a piece a few pages further in...
What kind of person will you become in the math and aftermath of all the fecality life slings at you between diapers and Depends?
I'm in 50 pages...good book.

What were you doing 7 years ago today?

I was driving in my car with my buddy Josh to get tattoos from a friend that had flown down from Washington to be at a tattoo convention. On the way down we heard the news that planes had flown into the towers...surreal.
What do you do...turn around...stockpile ammo...we kept going.
We holed up in a hotel room right next to Disneyland and got tattoos. Mine was the crucifix with Jesus on it. 5 hours.
We sat there and watched the footage of New York all day...it was crazy!

We've had way too much death on every side since that day. Redemptive violence has plagued us as a people since Cain and Abel. Has anyone really ever "won?"
Is it really winning when civilized people kill others to the point that one side gives up? Seems like after thousands of years with the same results, we as the human race could get a little more creative. There's been a few that have tried but those people usually get killed...ironic.

Take some time to pray for peace tonight.

Amazing

We love. from the Stirring on Vimeo.
The slow mo shot half way through with the dude dancing and clapping makes me want to pee my pants. Coolest shot of all time. Nate hit it out of the park!
We love.

Night of prayer

Last night was amazing!
Three hours in God's presence...it's been a while
Time to listen...time to pray...time to worship...time to pray with friends
No agenda...nowhere to rush out to
I need that in my life
Our church needs that
When's the next one?

You gotta give it to Zeke

How can you be mad at him when he does stuff like this? I think he's the most creative kid I've ever met. This morning I wake up to Sofia screaming. I come into their room and Zeke has scotch taped her into her bed so she can't get out...genius!
Side note...Moses slept from 11-4:30 last night...praise Jesus.
Of course he was awake from 4:30-6 and then Zeke and Sof were up at 6:45 but you gotta celebrate the little victories!

The great trade

Moses has decided to sleep a little better at night...praise Jesus.
Last night he stayed up till 1am but he only got up 3am.
Here's the kicker...I should of known when I saw Moses signal to Zeke last night with a wink. Zeke went over to the swing and there was some whispering.
Sofia and Zeke come in crying and screaming at 6am this morning!
Which of course was Moses' que to wake up and scream!
The great trade. Oh...the beauty of synchronizing three sleep patterns.
Maybe I can just retrain myself to only need 3 hours of sleep and I could be way more efficient.
Has anyone seen that Seinfeld episode where Kramer has a plan to take a 20 minute cat nap every 2 hours instead of sleeping through the night? Classic! I'm gonna try it.

My stairs

I just turned the corner to go up stairs and started crackin' up. I wonder if it's possible to have something strewn on every step!

Some thoughts on Sunday...

Go here.

Blog party

This week we are going to hit a pretty cool milestone at RevRock.org
At some point later in the week we are going to hit 50,000 visitors to the site and I want to throw a blog party. I'm not sure what all is involved yet but I'm pretty sure there will be party hats.
I know thats not many visitors compared to the big hitters out there but I love the little community that has sprung up from this blog. Riverside peeps, Redding peeps, random folk spread out all over the world...I love it.
You all have made this little corner of the internet a sweet place that makes me laugh and think and process the life that God has given me.
Please continue to comment and share your heart. It's those comments that gives this blog life.
Any ideas for the blog party?

And so it begins...

Tonight we start a new series.
It's actually more than that. We believe this is why God has placed the Stirring in Redding.
It's five words that we want to live out for the rest of our lives.
WE LOVE. WE MAKE DISCIPLES.
We love God
We love each other
We love the world
We love the least
Jesus said that the world would know we were his disciples by our love.
And every follower of Jesus has the call to make disciples. How? By teaching the people they're walking with how to love God, each other, the world, and the least.
We're trying to keep it real simple.
Church's can be about 4,872 things...we want to be about 2!
What are the things that make your church unique? I love to hear what other churches are doing.
You've gotta be at the Stirring tonight. Nate made a film that is going to blow your mind!

I wanna see this...

Thanks Micah

The weigh in

Well...the post baby craziness has not been good for the waistline.
I haven't been on my bike since two weeks before the baby.
I had to be ready to get home quick if Alyssa's water broke so I didn't want to be stuck with my bike somewhere if that happened.
Zeke started school right after the baby came and I have been taking him to school every morning which means I've got the car with me all day.
Add to that the fact that people are bringing us amazing food every other night for dinner (thanks Amy and Jeremy for last night) and you have recipe for disaster. I think I've gained about 3 pounds...bummer.
When the normal rhythm's of your life get thrown off everything goes bananas.
Any suggestions?

Eat your heart out Elton John!

I'm a proud father

Thursday, September 04, 2008

I told you we'd watch both sides

Sof is from Kyrgyzstan so I think she was impressed with McCain's resume abroad. Zeke was a little bored with gramps. Man...could these guys be any different?
There's things I like in both guys and things that really bug me about both.
The only thing I know is that my allegiance is not to a flag, a country, or a dude in an oval office. I long for the day that the church will start acting like the church and get its voice back! Husbands and wives start fighting to stay together, we love our neighbors, we pray for our enemies, and we look out for the least among us.
Politics intrigue me but I put no hope in political parties.
I try not to paint with too broad of a brush.
I just hope one of these dudes can keep college tuition from reaching $200,000 a year by the time my 3 kids are old enough!

The Stirring 2.0

So there are a lot of things on the ol' to do list right now as we are coming into fall and planting a church in 6 weeks. But one that we've been putting some time to lately is website and blogs.
Patrick showed us the new design for the Stirring site yesterday and it's amazing. We're using Covers promo photo for our We Love, We Make Disciples series that starts on Sunday...it will blow your mind. Plus I'm in the process of putting together and unifying all of our blogs. Our main blog is going to turn into our resource for Life Groups. Each week I'm gonna post thoughts and questions with Scripture from the weekend that Life Groups can tackle when they meet. I'm creating a Stirring Kids blog (just started) to communicate with parents. We have a Missions blog that Kari put together that is awesome, and I'm gonna work to make it look like all our blogs for the sake of a uniform look. (that's probably news to you Kari...sorry...sometimes communicating on my blog is quicker than actually talking to someone...I know that's really weird.) And eventually I'm gonna put together a Jr. High blog.
To me it just seems the easiest way to keep everyone on the same page. Parents can check in to see what's coming up and what we're all about and they can interact back and forth with teachers. People can track with where we are going as a church and add their feedback and questions. What do you think? Good idea?

My evenings

yeah I rock a sling! My motto is whatever it takes. I wish my blog had a way for you to hear the wails comin' from my little dude through these pics. Moses is going to front a metal band in jr. high...can't wait!

Los is the blog father

So I go check out my site meter today and it says I had 326 peeps come by yesterday and I think to myself...I usually have about 175 peeps a day and all I posted about was praying for the gulf coast...I barely had over 300 visitors on the day Moses was born!
First thing I do...
Go check out Carlos' blog...I betcha I made it somewhere in his rotating links...Yep.
I gotta give it up to you Los...your blog has pull...color me green with envy...you give someone some love and their stats go through the roof...thanks for lookin' out for the little guys!
I think if our blogs got in a fight on the school yard you would have the whole school chanting your name and you would pummel me for a good 3 minutes...but my blog can be pretty scrappy and I would take a cheap shot and kick your blog square between the legs...but the weight of your blog is overwhelming and you would probably just end up sitting on me and crushing my pathetic piece of the blog world. It would be fun though!
Thanks for hangin' with me and showing me how to tell the world about adoption.
All the best to you and your fam in the ATL.
Much blog love!

It was definitely a labor day

Woke up and Alyssa has Mastitis.
Most easily translated...can't move...feel like you're gonna die.
We took the kids to the Osborne's and Annette watched them for a couple hours so we could go to the clinic. Thanks Annette...lifesaver!
Picked the kids up and then the rest of my day looked like this...
Feeding...keeping the peace...trying to have Alyssa sleep...keeping three kids quiet...changing...rocking...repeat.
Three kids is crazy but three kids and a sick wife is nuts.
At least I wasn't up with Moses last night from 2-3am and 4-5am and at least Zeke didn't just wake me up at 6:45am to start the day...and at least I don't have to take him to school at 8:30am and then have a 5 hour staff meeting!
Did I mention it was definitely a labor day!
Wow.
I only get one of these posts a week and it's only Tuesday morning.

Pray for the gulf coast

I've been to New Orleans 3 times post Katrina for relief trips and this hurricane is the last thing that area needs. I actually have a community of people now in Covington that I consider good friends. There is a church that shut down operation for a year to become a mobilized force to restore family and houses. They are some of the most amazing people I've ever met. The situation is super fragile down there and I believe prayer is the best thing we can do right now.
