Post number 100...yeah!

Not bad for starting this bad boy in October of 06. I'm barely starting to get the hang of this whole blog thing. Hopefully it's been of use in giving you small glimpses into my life. I struggle with the whole, "hey come look at my life, I'm really important" thing. I'm not important and I try to live my life for others, not myself. Hopefully you get that and don't see this as some self absorbed vanity experiment. I have just found it really cool to be able to keep up with friends I don't see all the time and to give the world a little glimpse into the world of Dan. I'm sure as this journey continues there will be plenty of randomness, seriousness, funnyness, observationsness, and the butchering of the english language. Have you had any favorite posts up to this point? Anything you'd like to see more of? Less of? Would anyone care if my blog didn't exsist tomorrow? Just looking for some feedback on what we've gone through so far. I'll do a little blog evaluation every 100 posts. Leave your name if you are someone that reads this blog every once in a while. I'd like to know who this little community consists of.

Go to your happy place

Check out my wife rockin' her new bangs...lookin' hot...alright, stop lookin'
Is there a reason my wife is sitting with Jen and Damien on pirates? That's the make out ride!
Oh yeah, I remember...someone had to supervise Steve and Karen.

The joy of my life...the rummage sale bins...and my disgust for storage units

Today is annually the worst day of the year for any employee at the Grove. We spend the first three hours of our day emptying out these disgusting bins that are filled with peoples crap for our annual rummage sale. 2 forty foot containers jammed pack with stuff and junk piled up around the side of them. It blows me away the amount of crap that people bring to this thing. I know this weekend pulls in a ridiculous amount of money for our church but it never helps my attitude when I'm emptying those things.
Last night at Disneyland we were talking with the Dunlaps and O'Ferrells about the ridiculous amount of storage facilities in Riverside. Can we please burn all of those down and give the contents to the poor. How stupid is it that we have families in Riverside that can't afford to feed their kids but we have people with thousands of dollars of stuff jammed into storage units that they will never open. They have them because it's the American way to have stuff and we are the experts here in so cal. (sorry for the rant...I know some people in transition need those things, but everyone else should reconsider...in my humble opinion...take it or leave it) I guess working all day with peoples stuff that they don't need can put you in a bad mood :(

HATB services this weekend at the Grove

That's right...prepare yourself for an army of 100 dudes that can't sing, gettin' their sing on this weekend. This is our annual service that we do at the end of every HATB (Hands Across The Border) trip. Testimonies, pictures, video and a 100 person dude choir. I get to lead the festivities. It's always a good time. Hope to see you there.

New Orleans Pics (part 4)

The first pic is me and Pastor Alfred. He is an amazing man and great friend. He told me as I was leaving that he couldn't believe that we had just met this last year. He felt like we had been friends for a long time. I was really encouraged by that. The second picture is of a menu at this restaurant that we went to that was amazing. Here's a breakdown of some of the things I grubbed on this week: catfish, gumbo, jambalaya, ribs, red beans and rice, crawfish (aka: mud bugs), shrimp, soft shell crab, bread pudding, goosey cake, and king cake. It was ridiculous. Usually you go on a trip like this and lose weight but I think I gained 5. Well worth every pound though.
That's a pic of our sleeping quarters. 35 guys in two double wides with 2 bathrooms...good times!

New Orleans Pics (part 3)

On Sunday we took a tour of the detestation in New Orleans. There are some houses that still look like they did the day after Katrina, with everything still in them...16 months later. The 3rd pic is where a house used to be. Those are the cinder blocks that the house rests on. This was right next to the levy break and there are blocks of devastation that look like this. The houses were blown back about 5 blocks into other houses. The purple house is Lousille's house. This was the first house we gutted when I went last January. It's awesome to see that they finished the electrical and drywall and it is now ready to be sold. Her house was in the lower 9th ward. The last picture is of Joy Fellowship church. We stopped by to say hi to the people there. They have been feeding people and handing out supplies since the day Katrina hit. They are still doing it 2 days a week 16 months after the hurricane. Awesome ministry.

New Orleans Pics (part 2)

This is the church we were working at all week. Faith Bible in Covington, LA. We put up all the siding, interior studs, and a/c for the church. Yes, that is Mike Barnes in overalls! Yes, that's my brother with Mardis Gras beads on and really cool hair! Yes, that's Darryl Bokman and Bobby Martens (the Marine duo) wearing camo's as they work. And yes, that is a 28 foot firewall that runs down the center of the church that was crazy to install. Most of the trip I was at the top of a huge scaffolding working on siding or air conditioning. Ssshhh....don't tell Alyssa.

New Orleans Pics (part 1)

This is the house we gutted and some of the houses in that neighborhood. New Orleans is coming back, I was really encouraged by the progress but it is ridiculous how many neighborhoods still look like this. It is still by far the worst disaster facing the U.S. today and you hear about it all the time...that was sarcastic if you couldn't pick that up in the translation!

New Orleans here I come!!!

So I'm leaving tomorrow at 6am for New Orleans. This will be my 3rd trip and I can't wait. There are 33 of us going. This time we are going to be gutting houses, helping distribute food, and rebuilding the church that is at the center of the relief effort down in New Orleans. This picture along with millions of other great shots was taken by my friend Jim McGill. Go to his blog and check out his great work. Check out his pictures now before he's famous and you have to pay a lot of money for his work. I will try to keep up on my blog while I'm gone but I have no idea what the internet connection will be like. If nothing else I will put up a riduculous amount of pictures when I get back. The work is not done in New Orleans and it won't be for a long time...if you get a chance...go!

ipod donation???

Yep...so I'm meeting this guy for coffee at the Grove Grille, decide to talk to Aaron over in the bookstore for one minute. Come back to my table and someone stole my ipod. My Macbook was sitting there too but they left it. The manager saw three kids running off and there you have it...no more ipod. 60 gigs of love down the tubes. Is it karma for the amount of music I ripped from friends...oh wait, I don't believe in karma. Oh well...whatcha gonna do. I guess God is dealing with my attachment to stuff. I knew I could make it spiritual if I tried hard enough.

Book club...Oprah eat your heart out!

It's almost been a week but I've been behind on my posts a little bit. It was great to get together with a couple guys to talk about this book. What's funny is we liked the book but it really just sparked deeper stuff that is happening in all of us. We are all involved in full time ministry and it was great to have three guys from three different places talk about similar things that God is challenging us in. "The Jesus of Suburbia" showed us the comfy, "fit into my lifestlye" Jesus, and our question at the end was: "well then what do we do with the teachings of the Jesus we read in scripture?" One thing I've noticed is that I'm doing a lot of the same things but there is definately a new set of eyes that I'm seeing the world with. The needs around me and the people I see everyday are the same but something new is happening in the way I see them, hear them, and feel about them. Hard to explain. The last couple chapters of Simply Christian were huge to helping me get to this place. I read them after our book club and they were addressing a lot of our questions. Next book is How (not) to speak of God by Peter Rollins. I'm trying to sqeeze in reading Colossians Remixed by Brian Walsh and Slyia Keesmaat as well. I'm becoming a huge nerd!

Site meter

So this is the 5th time I've attempted to get my site meter to work and if it doesn't happen this time I'm done with it. But I really feel validation as a person when there are lots of people that come and visit me so please come and tell all your friends. My self worth is fully wrapped up in how many people visit my site. My site meter is a pretty good gauge for how many people love and care about me. :)

Zeke's first Disneyland experience!!

He did awesome. Loved Pirates except for the drops...I was getting the death grip during the drops. Small world closed as we were walking up to the line...bust. Loved going through Mickey's house. Carousel with the horses...you can see how that went. Churro...amazing! Didn't take his hands off his ears for the whole fireworks show. All and all he loved it. It was awesome hangin' with the Angulo's. Who else has passes? We're officially D'land people now.

Trav and Annette farewell party at our house

Hold em'

Notice the amount of chips chillin' in front of me.

Breakfast blog continues...

So I've got something new I've added to the breakfast regiment. The jalapeno bagel at It's a Grind will blow your socks off. It's a breakfast party in your mouth. You've gotta have a glass of water next to your Americano or you'll be a lot of trouble. Seriously...have you had it? It's worth the trip. What bagel tickles your fancy? Why did that sound dirty?

Rhythm

I ran across this guys blog after the "Isn't she beautiful" conference and I love what he has to say. You can hit him up at www.thelongbrake.com if you want more. Here's one of his recent posts. Loved it... BTW, I have no idea why the words are in italics, I can't switch it back...I'm a little slow.

deep breath. in. out. again. in. out.

there is a rhythm to breathing. it’s as if there is something built deep within us, inside our subconscious, to be rhythmic. you don’t have to think about it. you don’t have to try. you simply are. in. out. in. out.
it has been taught to me, and i have seen it, that there are rhythms to life built naturally within us. a certain teacher talks often of a 6 and 1 rhythm in God, and therefore in us as well. 6 on, 1 off. interestingly enough, i’ve even been taught that zoologists have discovered and seen a 6 and 1 rhythm in animals as well.
i’m reading a book right now called the sabbath by rabbi abraham joshua heschel. in it he talks about the rhythmic life of a Jew, how every friday night at dusk they, as a family, sit down for a dinner together and begin the process of observing the sabbath. without fail. every friday. from friday sundown to saturday sundown they do no work, but only what fills them up. puts them back together.
this rhythm is essential. studying these ideas has pushed me to see what other rhythms i have in my life, what rhythms do i lack, and how i begin the road to becoming the most whole person possible. what are the things i do regularly that are not life-giving? what things do i do that give life? make me whole? what are things i see throughout history that have given people life? these are the things i want.
there are seasons in my life when the phrase everything feels out of control runs too often through my head. anxiety surrounds me. i feel like i’m going from one stress-filled situation to the next, just trying to survive until i can lay down to sleep that night. i absolutely hate that feeling. i can’t stand it. as i continue to try to find what makes me whole, i thought i’d share a few rhythms i have that i’ve found to be life-giving, and therefore i believe to be of God.

•run _ there is a rhythm to running. being healthy is part of being whole. i started getting into running in early high school and then got addicted in college. i have found running to be, for me, so refreshing. i can clear my head and just put one foot in front of the other at whatever pace i feel like for that day.

•fast _ my friend tony and i are trying to fast once a week for a month to see if it gives life. i don’t quite understand what it is about depriving your body of food, but there is an awareness i have when i fast. i feel as though i see things more clearly and that my communication with God is more direct and honest. fasting is something i’ve ignored for a long time because i’ve used the exuse that i don’t understand it, and therefore shouldn’t practice it. poor choice. as i practice this rhythm i feel God giving me insight into why he designed it into the plan.

•bow _ i have this rug in my office. well, actually it’s a blanket i bought on the street in mexico, but i folded it into a rug of sorts. every morning (i should say almost every morning…some mornings i have failed to do so) when i go into my office i turn on my lamp, set down my pack, and bow. i pray for numerous things every morning, but there is something powerful in bowing to God. i read through numerous places in scripture of times when God showed up in some form or another to see how people reacted. if i believe that i can go into the presence of God then i want to respond appropriately. i found that time and time again people fall on their faces and on their knees. there is an awe and a silence that is consistently there. i want that rhythm in my life. when i enter the age to come i want to have knees that are prepared to be in His physical presence.

•photography _ this may seem a little more abstract (puns!) to you, but shooting photographs on a regular, rhythmic basis gives me a new perspective. i figure that if i feel more full of life when i do it then it must be something that God enjoys as well. i bet He is an incredibly good photographer. He should totally make a website. i’d put it in my bookmarks. i would.

•read _ my friend and i, for awhile, read 5 chapters a day of scripture for an entire year. after we finished reading front to back we started doing these ‘emersions’, as we call it, where we read a shorter book every day for anywhere from 23 days in a row to an entire month. one month we’d do philippians. then another month we’d do one timothy. then we’d do john in sections. i have fallen away from this rhythm in some ways and i’m trying to regain it again.

•walk _ i love walking everywhere i can. it gives me time to think and it saves money on gas and such. i try to walk as often as i can. but i need new shoes. buy me new shoes.

•stealing from small children _ don’t judge me.

i know that these things (sans the stealing) seem small, but they are huge to me. they are changing my life. every day feels more rhythmic, more in tune with how God designed me to be.

whatever it is in your week that gives you life, do it more and more. find the things that make you more whole and more you. find the things that you think God would enjoy doing as well and make them a rhythmic pattern in your life. God wants you to be whole and full of life. and so do i.

II Timothy 2:22

That's right...it's February and I still haven't finished my "Bible in a year" Bible...get over it.
Here's the words of a dying apostle Paul that is chained up in a cold Roman prison cell (in chap. 4 he asks Timothy to bring his coat).
vs. 22 Run from anything that stimulates youthful lust. Follow anything that makes you want to do right. Pursue faith and love and peace, and enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.
Don't know why but that was huge for me this morning. Have a great day!

The monkey has officially been lifted from the back!!!

To quote flava flav....yeaaaah booooooyyyyyyyeeeeeeee! Finally, the boys brought it home. I know my brother will eventually come through here and see this so be nice to the Bears. They're good...Colts are just better!!! Ha, ha. How can you not love Tony Dungy?

Read this book!

I realize everyone can't read backwards as well as I can so I'll help you out. Go out and buy "Simply Christian" by N.T. Wright. He's like the guru for guys like Rob Bell and Mike Erre. This book is like the modern version of C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." If you read it and don't like it then we can no longer be friends. Ha, ha!
