The Green Bible
I see Christian at Simpson yesterday and he busts this out of his bag and gives it to me.
It's the Green Bible...amazing
Manufactured using paper with ten percent post-consumer content. The Bible is printed with soy-based inks. The all-natural 100% cotton/linen cover material is produced in a green friendly environment (all air is purified before exhausting into the atmosphere and all water is purified and recycled.)
Essays in the front by:
Desmund Tutu, Saint Francis of Assisi, Wendall Berry, N.T. Wright, Pope John Paul II, Brian McClaren, Matthew Sleeth, etc.
Every passage (over 1000) in the scriptures that talks about the earth and God's care for all creation is in green.
The back has a resource guide that talks about issues like health, land conservation, practical steps a church and family can take to get started, and a bunch of great websites.

I'm pretty sure I'll still read the red letters Steve but thanks for the concern! I'm also pretty sure God had something to do with the writing and not the "green people." He just happens to like shrubs and stuff like that.

what about the Pink Bible? ... highlight in 'pink' all the passages speaking directly to women ... I'd be a millionaire ... women love that stuff ... (and I'll ask Becky Weber to write devotions in the margins) ... and every bible will come with a pink bookmark with a scripture verse ... yeah for pink ...
or you could have mclaren write a bible and it could be like a choose-your-own-adventure book...no ending would ever be the same!
What about an Obama bible with Barack on the cover?
the obama bible...it would call for babies who survived botched abortions to be stoned...it would also have a clause that if a senators daughter got pregnant she could have an abortion since we wouldn't want her to be punished by being pregnant...
a trendy bible... that's just what this world needs...

I use Mclaren and Bell books for toilet paper.. you don't see me bragging about that. And I'm almost positive I'm making a greater impact considering post-consumption...
I wonder if I can get the "Green Bible" as an application on my iphone... would it still be Green?
Never knew there could be so much controversy over a friend getting me a Bible. I promise it isn't the Satanic bible...maybe I wasn't clear in my post...this is the one that God actually helped inspire people to write!

I wish pomo Christians would take as hard of a stance against abortion, homosexuality and breaking God's commandments as much as they do for green living...just a thought.

Great point. Social Gospel at it's best. Like I said. What ever our agenda is it can be found in scripture for us to uphold. Even if it isn't God's agenda.
who said anything about your friend getting you a bible. We're all talking about the hillirious fact that you think it's Green and somehow better. That's all.
I love that part in the Bible when Jesus says, "suffer the little trees unto me".
First commandment God gives man in scripture is Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”
The word govern in greek means to lovingly steward or care for.
First thing God calls people to do is take care of the earth...I think that's significant...you can disagree...I'm not trying to be trendy.
I wonder how many trees/shrubs would be saved if the "green Bible" was never printed? The best way to be "green" is to consume less, not more.
The "greenest" Bible is located at half-price books on a shelf. It is a 100% post-owner product. I think it is safe to say we have more than enough Bibles in this country to go around five times over and don't need any more printed.
Is the greed Bible (oops, how silly of me, I mean the green Bible) anything more than a marketing scheme to make the publisher more money?

The last thing I need is another Bible but I really appreciated it as a gift. I'm passionate about the environment and I think it's cool that there's a Bible that is showcasing Gods heart for the earth. I'm a big advocate for re-buying products. I totally agree with you.

i don't think it is trendy either. in fact, the amish and mennonite communities have quietly been living "green" for 3 centuries right here in good ol' lanky. without fanfare or public service announcements.
my objection is less about the "green trend" and more about the fact that few christians are willing to touch the issue of abortion with a ten foot pole, but will gladly sign on and support an environmental agenda.
if someone came out with a "pro life" bible and all of the verses that related to the 6th commandment or the sanctity of life were highlighted in magenta....could you imagine the outcry? it would be so "judgy" and "polarizing".
to me, it just seems like a glaring inconsistency. and, before I would label the creator of the universe a "tree hugger"; i'd probably even more so label him a "human life hugger".
and, i know that you are not pro-abortion. this isn't a personal attack against you, please believe me, it is just this new wave of christian political activism that reeks of the same self-righteousness as the former brand only now it is about trees instead of human life.

The post is entitled, "The Green Bible," not "Why the Environment is more important than the lives of the Unborn" and as such I think it is bad logic/argumentation to criticize his post because it does not address abortion. Dan is not arguing that abortion is not an extremely important issue (at least with the posts that I've read). He just likes the green Bible. Based on my own reading of his blog, Dan could be staunchly opposed to abortion for all I know. Kids are everywhere around here.
Of course, maybe Leslie and Dan have talked more in depth about this issue and that is where the criticism is coming from. I just wouldn't know that from reading his blog or this post in particular.

jb- i wasn't taking dan to task personally about abortion. it was more of a criticism of the current christian political activism that tends to (how do i put this diplomatically....) downplay the issue of abortion, but readily takes up environmental causes. just seems inconsistent to me.
